Position Summary

The Community Educator plays a vital role in supporting LOPA’s core purpose of Making Life Happen. The Community Educator is responsible for raising awareness and educating the public about organ, tissue and eye donation while promoting the donor registry. This is accomplished through seeking out partnerships with key stakeholders, including those within areas of low authorization, first time licensees, hospitals and healthcare, OMVs and PTAs, and with business and organizations and key influencers.

Essential Functions

  • Coordinates and implements donation education for assigned service areas and actively promotes the Louisiana Donor Registry (or the national registry when the audience includes other states).
  • Identifies and partners with others in the community such as schools, service organizations, churches, student groups, businesses, hospital community outreach efforts, etc.
  • Helps maintain the department database of existing and potential contacts, maintain activity log and next steps for activities, and update contacts as needed.
  • Provides quarterly reporting to OMV and PTA offices and assesses and conducts specialized training for their staff in order to increase registry rates
  • Assists with planning and development of assigned Path of Remembrance and Donate Life Month events, including location scheduling, logistics, supplies and on-site management.
  • Coordinates with Hospital Development the implementation of a strategic marketing plan for LOPA to maximize hospital participation and foster the culture of donation within their service areas
  • Assists with implementation of LOPA’s regional sponsorship programming as directed.
  • Provides media monitoring and social listening of assigned social media accounts
  • Actively communicates within their regional facebook group and assists with monitoring social media for additional education and engagement opportunities.
  • Participates in volunteer recruitment, assists with training, and communicates/coordinates opportunities to volunteers in designated service areas.
  • Utilizes the Customer Relationship Management system (Giveffect) to track and analyze community outreach activities, track and manage volunteer participation and ensure the calendar of events is up-to-date.
  • Supports sponsorship and fundraising efforts as directed, including special events and peer-to-peer fundraising opportunities
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Actively seeks opportunities for outreach, media coverage, and partnerships within designated region
  • Maintains regular communication with the Community Manager and provides monthly reporting on individual and team goals and milestones
  • Attends regularly scheduled meetings with the department, staff and management team to communicate information and facilitate cooperative departmental activities.
  • Ensures that priorities are established for work performed, according to department goals.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with associated agencies and programs.
  • Participates in developing social media content and updates in assigned regional Facebook groups.
  • Participates in at least one Donate Life America, HRSA, ODC/Alliance, or AMAT workshop or webinar and at least one independent professional development activity as authorized by the Community Manager, annually.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Role Progression

This role is eligible for progression to a Community Educator II as determined by the department director after an evaluation has been completed.

Work Environment

  • Work required outdoors in elements such as precipitation and wind may be necessary at times.
  • Possible mental and visual fatigue associated with detailed work.
  • This position requires travel as needed using own transportation.
  • Some work is done indoors in an office setting.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment with a sometimes demanding time schedule.
  • Work in open space where noisy levels may occasionally be higher than normal.

  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Reaching with hands and arms.
  • Communicating with others verbally and electronically to exchange information.
  • Stooping, bending, kneeling or crouching.
  • Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.

  • Need for ability to hear.
  • Light work that includes moving or lifting objects up to 20 pounds.

Work Hours

Full time position, some nights and weekend work required. Occasional out of state travel for conferences or events. Overtime is expected only on occasion during peak times such as Donate Life Month (April).

Requirements:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/ or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Media relations experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to effectively present information and answer inquiries in large groups.
  • Ability to work independently and solve problems.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Google Suite products; understanding of CRM software preferred.
