Position Summary:

The Assistant Manager of Art Education works collaboratively and cross-departmentally to maintain high quality art-based programming campus-wide for children, youth, and families. This role works with the Manager of Art Education to curate innovative and functional arts programming, manage supply inventory and equipment, create and maintain administrative systems, and develop child centered language for CMP's Art Education programming. The Assistant Manager develops welcoming, friendly, and flexible creative experiences which embody joy, creativity, curiosity, and kindness. In the absence of the Manager of Art Education, the Assistant Manager assumes day-to-day leadership of the department, ensuring continuity of operations, supervising staff, and maintaining program quality and safety.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Supports the Manager of Art Education in the supervision of educators, interns, and volunteers. Assumes supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the Manager.

Essential Job Functions :

  • Works as a part of a high-functioning and learner-centered Art Education focused team.
  • In conjunction with the Manager of Art Education, supervises educators, interns, volunteers including scheduling and approving timecards.
  • Supports art experiences through ordering supplies, inventory management, and maintenance of studio art equipment, classrooms, and storage spaces for all Art Education programming.
  • Maintains a welcoming work area, including creating and upholding a high standard of safety and cleanliness for both visitors and staff, monitoring and anticipating supply consumption.
  • Facilitates daily hands-on art programming for visitors that is inviting, regularly changing, varied in format, uses real tools and materials, and is situated within and inspired by a diverse arts community.
  • Follows museum-identified best practices for creating and delivering exploratory, hands-on, and learner-driven experiences in an informal learning environment.
  • Work collaboratively with the Manager of Art Education to train, support, and give feedback to museum educators on arts-based programming and visitor experiences.

Additional Responsibilities :

  • Represents the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh and MuseumLab in a positive manner to the public, funders, and other stakeholders
  • Supports promotion and marketing efforts of arts programs by keeping web calendar and other communication channels updated with upcoming programming
  • Works with the Manager of Art Education to manage budgets, grants, and program resources
  • Supports the Manager of Art Education in staff scheduling and payroll processing as needed.
  • Works cross-departmentally and builds excellent working relationships between the art education team, the museum, and the community at large.

Job Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in art, art education, museum studies, or related field. Substitution of years of experience may be considered equivalent to formal educational training.

Experience:

  • Experience working with children and/or families in formal or informal learning spaces required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience developing and facilitating visual arts programming required.
  • Two (2) years of supervisory experience required.
  • Working practice with art making processes, materials, and equipment.
  • Administrative experience (project management, record keeping, budget management) required.

Skills:

  • Proficiency and enthusiasm for working with children, youth, and families from a variety of backgrounds and life experiences in an informal learning environment.
  • Personal interest in developing visual art concepts, materials, and processes.
  • Highly organized and communicative with proven analytical skills.
  • Willing to work as part of a team, and ability to take initiative and work independently.
  • A strong ability to set up and maintain systems.

Physical Requirements, and Equipment Usage:

  • Walking, standing, and sitting: The duties and responsibilities associated with this position will be performed in a stationary position (standing or sitting) for approximately 50% of the workday, and will require movement through the museum spaces to interact with visitors, educators, and to activate museum experiences.
  • Lifting: Regular lifting and moving of furniture, equipment, and supplies weighing up to approximately 50 lbs.
  • Manual Dexterity: May operate various equipment, including but not limited to power tools, sharp tools, ceramics equipment, and sewing equipment etc.

Work Environment, Hours of Work, and Travel Requirements:

  • Sunday-Thursday work schedule. Evening availability is occasionally required.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • Essential duties of this position will be performed in a museum environment, which includes interaction with the public and exposure to children and families.
  • Must have valid driver's license.

Clearances:

  • FBI fingerprints, PA Child Abuse History Certification (Act 33) and PA State Criminal Record Check (Act 34) are required.
